We would like to thank all of you for the job you have done this year
to improve the level of college football officiating in Southern
California. We did not get every call correct, but we did conduct each game
in a professional manner. The Bowl games and playoff assignments will
be made early next week. Dean, Jack, Bill and I will meet on Wednesday
to discuss the assignments. We all agreed that attendance at meetings,
test scores and evaluator's reports will be used to determine
assignments.

Bill, Dean, Jack and I have enjoyed the season and hopefully you have
become a better official and have helped others become better from these
weekly e-mails.
It is with sadness I report that Bill Vinovich Sr., the Dad of Billy
Vinovich (SCCFOA) and grandfather of Bill Vinovich (NFL) passed away this
week. The Vinovich officiating family was featured in a recent Referee
Magazine story.

On a personal note, I have launched a web site www.DayofGame.com. My
hope is to keep it updated with all the latest information and a quick
link to SCCFOA web site and other football related sites. I would
appreciate your comments on the site. Mark it as a favorite site and remember
it is always a work in progress.

Some comments from last weeks games:

We had an official drop his beanbag to mark forward progress on a play
where the ball appeared loose. The whistle killed the play however the
beanbag is an indication to all that we had a fumble. Do not mark the
forward progress spot with a beanbag!

Review the overtime procedures at the pre-game. There are still a few
games that have playoff importance.

When the ball becomes dead between the hash mark and the sideline the
ball will next be put in play on the hash mark. We had an umpire spot
the ball one yard inside the hash to give the team more room.

There was a situation last week where the BJ, after the ball was put in
play, shut the play down to advise the referee that the previous pass
never crossed the line. The BJ advised the referee that an illegal
forward pass should be called since the ball did not cross the LOS. The
referee passed on the illegal pass due to the QB being turned as he was
throwing the ball. First, the BJ was too late in reporting to the
referee and second, let's let the referee make this call.

Continue to be a good dead ball official on this last week of the
regular season. This is not the time to let up on what we have done so well
all season.
