News Around the SCCFOA

A few items from the recent national coordinators meeting:

· On an injury, a player MUST stay out of the game for one play and the intent of the new emphasis is to require teams to have a process for evaluation of the player. Therefore, the team cannot take a timeout to buy the player back into the game - he must stay out for one play. If it is the last play of the half, common sense and intent of the rule will allow for the halftime to be sufficient time for assessment of the injury and he could play to start the third quarter. The group was presented with an excellent presentation on concussions and why this is being emphasized. We will discuss this further at the clinic and provide hints on how officials can help recognize early symptoms of this condition.

· Wedge rule. “If an illegal wedge forms clearly before the touchback, it is still a foul.” If the wedge forms simultaneous or nearly simultaneous with a touchback, then we would not want it called. “When in question, it is not a foul.” We will use “Illegal Wedge Formation” as announcement and this is not considered an “unsportsmanlike foul” but rather just a non-contact foul, so we do not want to announce that it is a UNS. Therefore, violations of this rule will NOT be considered as unsportsmanlike acts and will not be subject to the same 2 X UNS and a player is ejected by rule. We will have plays at the summer clinic to discuss this further and the CFO website will also have a video at the beginning of the season that will illustrate this new rule.

· It was approved for the 2011 season that the college uniform for football officials will include a jersey with 2" stripes rather than the current 1" stripe. We will use the current 1" striped shirts this year and make the change next season.

Thank You, Rich Kollen
